Project
Away from the big tech platforms, on to the fediverse. But is that any more democratic? (Completed project.)
Public Nodes investigated the shift from central, Big Tech-controlled social media platforms to decentralised alternatives in the fediverse, and looked critically at the democratic aspects of that move. We asked our first question: how is power distributed? Who makes and enforces the rules, and how are decisions legitimised? Under the banner #Fedipolitics we looked at how moderation works in practice on Mastodon, Pixelfed and PeerTube.
Carried out with Waag Futurelab, Procolix and Radboud University, with support from ClickNL.
