Workshop
Learn to understand the extreme sides of visual language on social media. Because sharing a meme is sometimes less innocent than you think.
Memes circulate on social media: an image, a clip, a music-and-dance combination. Often they are funny and innocent to share. But sometimes a hurtful or extreme message is hidden inside, and you end up spreading harmful content without knowing it. In the Know Your Meme workshop you get hands-on with the memes and trends going round online, so that you better understand what young people come across and how to deal with it in your work.
What you learn
- What memes are, how they work, and why some go viral.
- What young people come across online, using current examples.
- How to gauge the impact of a meme, using the MATTER framework.
- The difference between innocent and problematic memes, by dissecting them together.
The workshop is interactive: you analyse examples together, share your own work experiences, and discuss how to handle online trends.
For anyone who wants to better understand the visual language of social media. We have previously delivered the workshop to youth workers and professionals at the City of Amsterdam. We adapt it to your audience.
